How do exhaust systems work?

The purpose of the exhaust/emission system is to deaden the sound made by the internal combustion engine, reduce the temperature of the exhaust, and control the emissions that come out of your vehicle. Vehicles create harmful gases during the combustion of fuel. The catalytic converter in the exhaust system turns these gases into mostly harmless ones that do much less damage to the environment.

      OIL CHANGES

Oil has two jobs in the engine. One is to reduce the amount of friction by putting a layer of oil between the moving parts and the other is to help cool the parts of the engine as it circulates through.
If there were no oil in your engine, the moving parts would create so much heat that they would eventually melt together causing the engine to lock up. Once those engine parts melt together, there is no getting them apart.  Over time, oil breaks down.  In addition to the breakdown of the oil itself, there are also additives that are put in engine oil. These begin to break down and lose their effectiveness over time. There is also the issue of contamination. Small bits of dust, dirt and debris get into your engine and make their way into the oil. All these little bits of “stuff” make the oil much less slippery and much less effective at cushioning the moving parts of the engine.

Most technicians recommend that you get an oil change every 3000 miles for maximum engine protection.

      BRAKES & SUSPENSION

Stopping power is crucial to a safe and successful driving experience.  Whether you need a brake repair or brake replacement, our Experienced Service Technicians can help you get safely—and confidently—back on the road. Sometimes, your vehicle's brakes will alert you when there's trouble. Whistling noises, chirping sounds, and grinding are indications that a brake repair is required. Here are some common causes of brake pedal pulsation and/or noise:

  • Worn brake pads

  • Heat-cracked or worn rotors

  • Loose-fitting brake pads in the caliper

  • Uneven torque of lug nuts or caliper hardware

Brakes often come equipped with a small-thin piece of metal attached to the brake pad to act as a warning indicator when the pad material is getting low and the brake pads should be replaced. This device makes a chirping noise on brake application, letting you know it is time to have your brakes serviced.

According to recent studies, 5 percent of all motor vehicle fatalities are clearly caused by automobile maintenance neglect.  By following simple and inexpensive preventive checks you will greatly extend the life of your vehicle, ensure safer operation and even benefit the environment.  Always consult your owner's manual for individual service schedules because maintenance requirements vary by manufacturer.
